The new system’s cap is designed using three-dimensional head mapping to fit head and face exactly. The goggles allow a swimmer to see the lane beside him or her a little more clearly. They are leak-resistant, have an improved outer profile and offer 180-degree peripheral vision. The suit has compression fabric to stop muscle vibration, flexible fabric in the shoulders to offer high stretch and a flat-seamed body stability web which makes for a 3-per-cent improvement in starts and turns, the maker says. Men’s swim shorts – or jammers – have no drawstring, making for a flatter fit; and women’s suits have a unique armhole entry system.

It’s the latest bid to advance the battle of sport technology past the now-banned polyurethane suits that came out before the 2008 Olympics. Those inflexible suits – which could take 45 minutes and a helping hand to get into – made the body buoyant and created a flurry of records. It was not something swimming’s governing body, FINA, wanted to see when the record book was rewritten more than 40 times at the Beijing Games in 2008 and at the 2009 world championships in Rome. The high-tech suit was banned and engineers went back to the drawing board. With polyurethane suits, the idea was to find a loophole in the regulations and gain an advantage – a technological kind of doping. It rendered the record book and historic performances meaningless.

The new technology claims that this system will produce an 11-per-cent improvement in oxygen economy and reduced drag, which will help a distance swimmer cut through the water stronger for longer periods.

Paying a lot of money for a swimsuit is not always going to extend the life of the swimwear. Most swimsuits are made of Lycra/Nylon material which is not durable. You can get a better made swimsuit by paying a little more; however, there are plenty of swimsuits for under $50.00 that are well made. Specialty swimsuits are typically expensive, so if you are looking for a tummy controlling swimsuit, be prepared to pay more money.

NEVER put your swimsuit in the washing machine or any mechanical device. If you accidentally wash your swimsuit in the washing machine it will not destroy it, but continuously doing so will shorten the life of your swimsuit.  One cycle in the dryer and your swimsuit will probably not last the entire summer.

Most swimsuits are made of Lycra or Spandex material. These materials are not very durable, therefore, they must be cared for gently. It does not matter about the price of the swimsuit because it is the material that predicts the life of the swimsuit. Yes, there are different grades of Lycra and Spandex, so if the designer used quality Lycra, then your suit will probably last a bit longer than a cheaper grade of Lycra (two to three seasons if used frequently in pools).

Best form of care to keep your favorite swimsuits looking like new.  

Hand wash your swimsuits in mild detergent like Woolite. Swimsuits should not need a vigorous wash, so a ten minute soak with a couple of back and forth movements before completing the wash should do it.  Rinse with cool to warm water. Do not ring or twist your swimsuit, simply fold your wet swimsuit, place it into a dry towel and apply pressure (stand on the towel or use your hands to apply the pressure). Remove the swimsuit and hang it to dry (not in the sun).

Following these simple care instructions should keep your swimsuits looking like new for a long time. For best results rotate your swimsuits.
